Congratulations! You made the totally awesome switch to natural deodorant! Most people experience a short adjustment period and that is totally normal. Usually issues resolve themselves and you never have to worry again. Occasionally, however, a bit of troubleshooting is necessary. If that describes you then you have come to the right place. You have questions. Good! We have answers!
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I use?
This is a case where less is more. It is not necessary to apply a thick coat. Simply use a pea-sized amount under each arm. It should be able to be completely rubbed in and absorb into your skin. And keep it in the pit! Rubbing deodorant in beyond the immediate armpit area can increase the chance of irritation.
So how long will my adjustment time be?
Good question! The adjustment time ranges from no time at all to a couple of weeks. You may experience some discomfort in the beginning. Extreme pain is not cool and if none of the following tips work for you, please discontinue use. This is rare but unfortunately it does happen from time to time.
Will this deodorant stain my clothes?
Another great question and a very important one. Nobody wants yucky buildup in their favorite shirt. After many years of using conventional deodorant and after many, MANY uses of a variety of experimental homemade deodorants, we can confidently say that Kokomo Cream washes out more cleanly than anything we have used. The purity and simplicity of the ingredients wash out well without any special laundry treatments. Make sure you are not using excessive amounts and let it soak in for a few minutes before you dress and your shirts will be safe!
My deodorant arrived separated.
This is a super easy fix. Delivery trucks can be HOT! Kokomo Cream is solid at room temperature but can arrive to you melted depending on the weather. We recommend you give it a gentle but thorough stir with a skewer or something similar and pop it into the fridge for 30 minutes or so until it sets up again. See, we told you it was easy!
Is Kokomo Cream an antiperspirant?
The short answer is no. Wait, wait, wait, let me explain! Sweat is a natural and healthy way for your body to keep cool and flush toxins. When you first switch, you will likely notice your sweat but it should not take long for your body to adjust. This deodorant will not stop sweat in the way you are used to with conventional deodorant but it will allow your body to do its thing and it shouldn’t take long at all for that excessive sweating to mellow out to a minimal amount.
Troubleshooting tips
My armpits are rashy and itchy. Help!
First of all, don’t panic. A bit of redness and irritation sometimes happens. We won’t say it’s okay because that would be cruel. But it isn’t totally outside the norm. Most people just need a bit of time for their body to adjust. Some people, however, because of the pH of their skin, need a bit of help. A simple apple cider vinegar spray helps solve most cases of red irritated skin. Here is an easy recipe:
pH Rebalancer
- 1 Tbsp. ACV
- 1 cup distilled (or well filtered) water.
- Mix that together in a small container (if you have a spray bottle, this would be absolutely awesome as a little spray).
How to Apply Your pH Rebalancer
Before you apply your homemade deodorant, dab or spray on a small amount of your sweet, simple rebalancer, and rub it all over your armpit area. Hold those arms up and let it dry completely. Then, once it’s dry, apply your deodorant.
Now, if you’ve let things build up until you have rawness, you might want to take a total break from baking-soda-based deodorant for about a week, and apply this pH rebalancer two times a day. Once the redness is gone you can resume using Kokomo Cream. From then on, you can just use the rebalancer before you apply your deodorant, as outlined above.
Pro tip: Don’t forget to wait a while to apply baking-soda-based deodorant (or apple cider vinegar) for that matter, if you’ve shaved in the shower. Nothing says ouch like applying either of these things to nicked, irritated-with-a-blade skin.
Why are my armpits darkening?
This one is a bit of a mystery and it happens MUCH more infrequently. When we first started hearing about this problem, we were pretty stumped. While it is rare, those who experience this find it is natural deodorant in general that causes it, not one specific brand, and it seems to be relatively specific to people who have darker skin to begin with. It may have something to do with melanin and how it reacts with one of the main ingredients (coconut oil, arrowroot/cornstarch, or baking soda). The “fix” we’ve found that works for most people who have this little issue is two-fold: Apply the pH rebalancer as described, but also make sure to exfoliate your underarms when you bathe (using a washcloth or a soft loofah).

My deodorant is too hard to rub in.
This can happen in cooler weather when the coconut oil hardens more solidly. Simply scrape the desired amount out (the back of your nail works well for this) and hold it to your underarm for a few seconds. It will quickly become soft enough to rub in as usual.
