Several weeks ago, I posted a quick tutorial on how to make lotion bars. They were fun and cute and all kidsy … until you read to the bottom and see a mention of Nutty Butt Butter (which are also lotion bars).
It was just a little something I whipped up on the spur of the moment that’s designed to help break down and disappear cellulite. And the room went wild. Everyone’s been asking me for this recipe, and since I’m making it for the swap on Sunday, here it is in all its glory.
It’s been tweaked a bit since my first recipe, and heaven love it, it’s pretty danged awesome. However, the recipe I made is pretty intense in terms of ingredients and cost, so at the bottom, I’ll give you a pared down recipe you can use if you don’t want to shell out the monies for the whole thing.
When you make this, you’ll actually do it in two parts (over a week), but both parts are easy like Sunday morning.
Nutty Butt Butter, Step 1, Infusing the Oils
A week or two before you’re ready to make your nutty butt butter lotion bars, you’ll need to start infusing oils with ground coffee. The first recipe didn’t include infusing oils, and I didn’t really think the coffee had gotten in deep enough to have much effect.
(As you probably know, coffee extract is included in almost every store-bought cellulite treatment available … because it’s so danged effective.)
The recipe below calls for 1/2 c. oil, since that’s what I made and measured, but if you want to use ALL your oil for this, just make the recipe plus a half recipe. Pretty easy.
Nutty Butt Butter – The Recipe
For this recipe, which yields two medium sized bars, you’ll need the following things:
Also, if you want your bars to be fancy, too, you’ll want some whole-bean coffee to float on the top at the end.
It’s nice to have a kitchen scale when you do this, but if you don’t, this recipe’s going to help you out a lot. This is because I do not have a kitchen scale, so everything I did was eyeballing.
Instead of 3 oz, think 1/2-cup. The only caveat is, you’ll use a little less than half a cup of the oils (because they’re heavier). And, you’ll want to smush down the grated beeswax well while you’re measuring, because it’s lighter.
Got it? A little under 1/2 c. of coffee-infused oil. And a tightly packed 1/2 c. of grated beeswax. The cocoa butter can just be measured out (shaved) as normal. No need to pack.
After you’ve measured out your ingredients, add the cocoa butter and beeswax to a double boiler (or makeshift double boiler, with one smaller pot sitting above a larger pot with steaming water). Stir well.
Once the cocoa butter/beeswax is almost all melted, add in your coffee-infused oil and stir constantly, until the whole mixture is completely melted and liquid.
Now you have to move fast. FASTER, PEOPLE.
Move the mixture off the burner, and start dropping in your essential oils.
Good essential oils for cellulite busting: Cypress, rose geranium, juniper berry, grapefruit, lemon, lemongrass, rosemary.
The only essential oil I consider absolutely essential as one of your choices is rose geranium. It’s not just great for breaking up the yuckbumps, it also blends divinely with the coffee smell. Makes you wanna lick the lotion bar. Just a little. Just to see.
Stir as you’re dropping in the essential oil, and then pour immediately into your molds. However! If your mixture has hardened a little at this point, you can put it back over the double boiler just until it remelts. THEN pour it in.
In the last post, I had several people ask me about the mold I was using. It’s just a jumbo silicone ice cube tray I ordered from Amazon a year ago or so. The size is great. Just enough to hold in your hand comfortably. More than a handful is too much. (Yes. That is what he said.)
As SOON as you get that poured into your molds, if you’re going to top it with coffee beans, start sprinkling them in. For mine, it was somewhere between 20-25 beans per bar. They float right at the top, and when it hardens, they stay there.
Now just pop it into your freezer for about 20 minutes, and then slide the lotion bars out into your hot little hands.
My educated guess is that the way you’ll get the most mileage out of these things is by dry body brushing (especially your problem areas) before you shower, and then apply the lotion bars to your problem spots after you shower.
And here’s the recipe!
Nutty Butt Butter
- Just shy of 1/2 c. coffee-infused oil (or 3 oz.) – recipe above
- 1/2 c. shaved cocoa butter (or 3 oz.)
- 1/2 c. grated beeswax, or beeswax pellets (or 3 oz.)
- 20 drops rose geranium essential oil
- 10 drops cypress essential oil
- 10 drops rosemary or juniper essential oil
- Whole-bean coffee (for appearance, optional)
In a double boiler, combine the cocoa butter and beeswax and melt almost completely. Add the coffee-infused oils and stir well until everything is melted and warm. Remove from heat and drop in the essential oils, stirring well. Immediately pour into the molds (or reheat, if the mixture has hardened, and then pour). Sprinkle on whole-bean coffee. Pop your molds into the freezer for 20 minutes, then remove the bars and enjoy. Store in a small jar or other storage device. These should last 1-2 years.
Nutty Butt Butter – Simple Version
- Just shy of 1/2 c. coffee-infused oil (or 3 oz) – simple version recipe above
- 1/2 c. shaved cocoa butter (or 3 oz.)
- 1/2 c. grated beeswax (or 3 oz)
- 30 drops rose geranium essential oil
- Whole bean coffee (for appearance, optional)
In a double boiler, combine the cocoa butter and beeswax and melt almost completely. Add the coffee-infused oils and stir well until everything is melted and warm. Remove from heat and drop in the essential oils, stirring well. Immediately pour into the molds (or reheat, if the mixture has hardened, and then pour). Sprinkle on whole-bean coffee. Pop your molds into the freezer for 20 minutes, then remove the bars and enjoy. Store in a small jar or other storage device. These should last 1-2 years.
And That Concludes the Epic Nutty Butt Butter Recipe
I’m headed out tomorrow to get a few more supplies, so I can take more to the swap. I have the feeling these are my magic key to ALL the phenomenal swapstuff. Because … just look at them.
On one hand, these would make a memorable, unique gift. On the other hand, I can’t imagine actually giving them to someone and going, “Um. You know. Lotion bars for cellulite that I made JUST FOR YOU … uh … not that you need them.”
On another note, the infused honey was voted most on what I should take as my lavender offering. I need to go back through and read the comments again, and then I’ll contact the two of you who’ll be getting some in the mail soon.
Happy weekend …
And happy NUTTY BUTT BUTTER MAKING!

I’m infusing come (fair trade) coffee now in meadowfoam & wheat germ oil. Fingers crossed for a bit of a ‘drier’ oil.

i finally made mine last night!!! I’ve been dying to make them! They smell amazing! I haven’t used one yet, but I cannot wait to use it! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
Christy
I started infusing the oils 3 weeks ago, after very (im)patiently waiting to receive oils I had ordered from Mountain Rose Herbs. Now the day is finally here and I’m so excited!! I’ve got a funnel in a jar with coffee filters in it and draining. However, it’s draining so slowly. It drops down MAYBE a drop in a minute. Any suggestions?
melissa
Was wondering if I could use oils that I have on hand. coconut, olive and I have lard that I use in soap making if I use beewax as hardener will it come out the same? thanks for this post I cant wait to try it:)

Argh these look great. Ivw bought all the ingredients and im desperatebto get St arted. How many lotion bars does this recipe make?
TiaGreene
I use the Made from Earth Holistic Honey Lotion and somehow I put it on, and at night – IT TINGLES – At first it freaked me out but that’s prove that it’s doing it’s job. Of course, after applying to your cellulite, you must MASSAGE the Made from Earth Honey Lotion several minutes DEEP, so blood circulation can be doing it’s job ( I hope I am not mistaken) …..I can see a MAJOR difference in my cellulite since I have been using it. . .
Becca
Really really like these but they melt so fast!!! I wanted to give them for Christmas but I’m not sure they are going to survive all the way to destination! 🙁
And also, I thought it was really hard straining the oil… I lost so much, and also had to start again a few times.
Anna
Is there any way I could buy one from you?? That would be soo amazing!!

I’m wondering… when making the coffee infused oil, do you need to refrigerate or do you leave out at room temperature?
Thanks, Stef
Ruchi
Do you have any suggestions for what to do with the oily coffee grounds?
Beth
I have been meaning to make these forever, and I finally got around to it. In a word, they’re awesome!! I used a French press for the coffee oil infusion and had no grounds in my coffee oil. I melted my beeswax and shea butter (because cocoa butter tends to break me out) in my crock pot little dipper, and it worked like a dream! Then I poured in my coffee oil, essential oils, and stirred before pouring into deodorant tubes, and…. taa dahh! These rock!!

OMGoodness!!! I have already started making my coffee EO before I ever finished reading For the past month I’ve been totally into oils and it started with coconut oil and I’ve had to move things out of my Kitchen and into my hallway closet because I’ve got too much And don’t fit in my kitchen anymore lol Thank you thank you thank you so much For sharing this recipe!!!
Alex
I’ve started getting my oils from a website called healthandhappiness.com.au, and there’s an oil called Arnica that’s especially good at speeding up blood circulation (and it even speeds up the healing process of broken bones!!). The site owner makes her own hair serum that has Arnica oil mixed into it along with other carrier oils, essential oils and herbs.
I wonder if that’d be the best carrier oil to go with a cellulite-buster recipe, since the point of it is to help speed up blood circulation.
I’m going to try putting it on my legs every night because I have poor circulation in them anyway.
Jennifer
I so enjoy all of your posts. Your sense of humor is the perfect start to a great day. Thank for sharing your recipe. I was just thinking about making some of these yesterday. It must be fate.
Debra
why is this not in the market? I want it…
Mia Gordon
Yummy deliciouso products 🙂

I’m considering trying this recipe using green coffee beans. Unroasted coffee has higher caffeine content and all of the coffee goodness completely intact. I’m thinking I’ll do one batch as written with the roasted/ground infused oils and maybe a bar or two using green coffee instead.
Ruchi
Did you end up trying both? I am thinking about using green coffee for the same reasons.
Lauren
I left my oil infusing for two weeks and when I strained it I only got about 100ml out. Very disappointed. I used filter ground coffee. Am trying again with half a cup of french press ground coffee to a cup of oil, hopefully it will yield a bit more this time. I guess my butt butter will have to wait another two weeks…
Newbuttermaker
These look amazing! Can I substitute tamanu oil for macadamia nut oil?
walela
can I leave out the beeswax? since i have an allergy to bees idk if i should try it with the beeswax.
Deb Madill
I have the oil infusing right now. So excited to make these!
I’m planning on giving a few away as gifts. To others looking for packaging ideas – I’m planning on cutting up an old brown paper bag to wrap the bars in, then tying with some string I saved. Sometimes it pays to hoard things:)
Sheribabyncali
Have you ever thought about selling these?
Jenny
Exactly what I was going to ask! I can’t currently afford to have a fully stocked supply of all these fancy oils, and I don’t know how long it will take me to acquire them all.
Aami
If I added an extra ounce of beeswax how would that affect the recipe?
I made a lotion bar recipe and used = proportions ( followed your other lotion bar tutorial) and I felt like the end product was a bit greasy.. So if I added more beeswax would that make for a less greasy former bar??
Laurk25
I didn’t even get HALF a cup of the coffee infused oil?? Why would that much stick to the coffee, I did let it go about 3 weeks could that be why? Mines not as dark either. Disappointing to waste 1/2 cup of oil on coffee. Still trying the recipe, hope it works out
RebeccaEllsworth
I just tried this – I thought the finished product was nice, but a bit too waxy and didn’t melt on my skin as well as I wanted. I melted them down and added an equal part of coconut oil, and now they’re perfect. Thanks for the recipe – I love it and will definitely keep making it!

Hi Beck!
I found this great recipe for belly butter. My boss is expecting and I made this for her.
Everything listed is natural, and so very nourishing for the skin.

I was so excited to make these. I followed the “simple” recipe to a T… Much to my dismay, the 2 bars that it did yield ended up smelling like a mix of pesticides and coffee. 🙁 I think next time I make them I’m going to omit 100% the rose geranium oil and hope I can find a decent substitute oil that will smell better. Such a sad panda. 🙁

I have received bath melts (similar composition) from a company in a bag resembling these

I am certain there are other options but these could be decorated for the occasion as well (Vday, Birthday). Have my oil and coffee in a jar right now 🙂
Deb Inman
Infusing the oils now. can’t wait to try this. I would love to sell this in the little foot scrub molds. not sure what to charge for them though. the oils are not cheap. I may keep it all for myself lol. thanks for sharing!
Veganeclectic
I love it! Will have to make some soon!

I love this lotion bar recipe! So now I have a question for Betty or the community. I know that cocoa butter is great for expecting women to use to help prevent stretch marks, so I was thinking about making a “Belly Bar” for my newly expecting sister-in-law. But I am not sure if the coffee is a good idea. Does anyone have a recipe that they have tried already, or some suggestions about what to include? I was thinking of coconut oil, but I am open to all suggestions and feedback. Thank you!
Sonia
love this recipe, i combined the basic with the coffee beans from this one and they are just great!
do you have any cleaning tips for the pots and pans? i used soap and hot water and it did the trick for the most part but there is still a bit of cloudy residue. thanks!
Ella
I’m making these lotion bars as Christmas gifts but I’m stumped as to packaging – any ideas? :

One more question, I have recently started using Homemade flax seed Gel for my hair. As Flax Seed Oil is good for the skin, so is the gel. So, I apply it to my Keloid scar and within a week, I have noticeable improvement, if not dramatic.
What are your thoughts of boiling the coffeee grounds with the flax seed and water? Using the flax seed gel/coffee as a direct skin lotion on the cellulite areas. I am only on day one of this experiment so I do not know how it will work, if it will that is!
Polly Intactly
I love love love your blog. Why could’t I simply use the infused oil as a lotion directly on my skin?I am concerned about using soaps. The logic of soap makes no sense. It is oil mixed with lye. I wouldn’t use lye on my skin! So, why use modified Lye (oops, saponified oil) on it. Then, on top of it, we add Oil back into the “Modified Lye (soap)” so it doesn’t dry our skin. If something does so much damage to our skin that our skin needs so much extra treatment following its use, is it really good for us?Personally, I am now using diluted baking soda in a water bottle, tbls spoon per shower, starting from head to toe, and scrubbing that way. Or, I put it on a wash cloth and scrub. then, use my Extra virgin Olive Oil as my lotion and facewash. Wow, I feel 100% good about using this on my toddler. Heck, if we want, we can have some to eat and go cook with it too!Anyway, just curious on your thoughts to use the infused oil as a direct skin lotion.
Kristina Greene
This sounds great. Can’t wit to try it and some of the other lotion bars. Maybe a silly/stupid question, but do you have to infuse the oil with fresh coffee grounds or could you use used grounds (already used to make coffee)? I’m always looking for ways to reuse things!
Jennmnoble
I just made these. Oh MAN do they smell amazing!! I really do want to lick it off my skin….mmm… I think my coffee grounds were a little too fine as I had a really hard time straining all the coffee grounds out of my oil. My bars have little coffee specs in them that rub onto my skin. I will have to use a coarser grind next time.
I also tweaked the recipe a little to make a lotion by swapping out the beeswax for some brewed coffee and emulsifying wax. This lotion looks like chocolate pudding!! I LOVE IT!!
I will be giving the lotion bars away as gifts and keeping my new lotion all to myself. Thank you so much for sharing this!!!
I also want to tell you how much I absolutely love your blog. You have inspired me to slowly switch all my personal care items from store bought to homemade. I’m having such a great time with it and am constantly searching your blog for tips, recipes and inspiration. You are the best!
Deb Inman
Could you also ground the coffee so fine that you could use it in the bars or lotion? I would think it would be an exfoliate too and not waste the coffee with all the good oils in it? it would have to be almost powdered ground though i would think.
Stacey
Is there a cheaper alternative you would recommend instead of the tamanu oil? I’m not sure it’s within budget but REALLY want to try this. Also, where can I find the rose geranium oil? I searched Mountain Rose Herbs and I don’t think they have it.
Thank you!
Amina
Mountain Rose does have it; it’s listed under “Geranium (Rose)” so check the F-L section of the essential oils page.
Katie
http://www.anandaapothecary.com/aromatherapy-essential-oils/geranium-rose-essential-oil.html
I just received an order from Ananda Apothecary, and love everything I ordered. Their tamanu oil is reasonable, and within 3 weeks of daily use my scars are significantly fading. Haven’t tried their rose geranium oil yet, but their lavender oil is the best I’ve ever tried.
Kori Rockwell
I’m infusing the coffee right now and I’ve ordered some 2 oz round “deodorant sticks” to put them in instead of the bars, that way it’s easier for me to give as presents AND easier to apply. Hopefully it works out like I think it will!
KarinSDCA
How did the twist-up containers work?
Maracca1
I also ordered twist up containers and they work great!
Ruchi
How many containers did you have to use? And what size were your containers?
Renata
I was thinking, would maybe heating up the oils with the coffee make the infusing process go faster (boiling in a pot or something or the sort?)? I have 2 batches going and I am anxious to get one finished. As the first batch has cheaper oils I may test it out in a day or 2. Open to comments, stop me now if you KNOW it won’t work please 🙂
Renata
that part worked out ok, draining was a tad hot, I luckily have burn proof hands, but if you don’t, maybe you want to let yours cool first lol. My mistake was using a container that was tough to get it out of after and the first batch is too sloppy to use as gifts. It’s fine, I took some to my daughter’s preschool teachers to try out and let me know if there’s way s to make it even cooler. They were impressed with the all natural mini gift for no reason 🙂
Renata
ok don’t warm the coffee to speed it up. I used it after a bath last night and my husband said I smelled, not in the good way, he used the word pungent and like a hair perm lol… the coffee takes on a smell if you warm it… sorry thought I would share 🙂

Where can I find these ingredients in New Delhi, India? Any idea/ Help – please!!!

Ohhhh man I’m still laughing at ‘that is what he said’ 😀 Perfect belly laugh for a tired Sunday evening!
It’s funny you know, the lotion bar thing didn’t really make sense to me the first time I read about them, but something has changed. I think the convenience factor has just dawned on me. It would be great to keep one in your drawer at work so when just before an important meeting you realise you have lizard legs, right there is your handy solution. Ok yes I realise this particular evolution is for butts, and whipping one’s butt out to de-dimple just before a meeting might not be quite appropriate, but you get what I mean. Actually in hindsight (ha! hind!), that manoeuvre would take the focus off dry legs too hehe.
Now to find me some beeswax….
Lauren @ DessertsByLauren.com
I’m curious about how to store these too. I can’t wait to try this out! Thanks for sharing!
Nancy
Can you tell me how many bars one recipe makes? Thanks
KarinSDCA
It’ll depend on what size your mold is or the container you use….
the petite gourmet
So love these! Once I get my hands on some cocoa butter and beeswax, I’m making them!
Julilal
Hey Crunchy Betty,
I love your site. I just made lotion bars using Shea butter and they are fabulous! I was wondering what was your idea behind the change from Shea to cocoa butter from your original recipe. Different scent? Or has better properties? I like the idea of coffee and chocolate and think that these would make good Christmas gifts, even if I just say they are just lotion bars. ;). Thanks.
Stephanie
Yum! I’m so glad you posted this in time for the holidays. Love the idea of coffee infused oil.
D M Roudebush
Great! Thanks for sharing! I have almost all the ingredients right now. And thanks for the laugh….”more than a handful”….ACK!!!!! How funny!!
KarinSDCA
Simply awesome!
I am infusing organic vanilla beans in virgin coconut oil right now. MMMmmmmm….
Infusing coffee will require buying coffee (we don’t drink it) and finalizing my MRH order (tamanu oil and the herb calendar are in my shopping cart right now). Cellulite-B-Gone is in the queue!!!!!
Gelato
Cellulite-Be-Gone bars—–can’t wait to make this Nutty Butt Butter! Have great fun at the swap. Whoever gets your stuff is going to be lucky!
Melissa Vliem
So cool! Quick question – how do you store these? Last weekend I made lotion bars with coconut oil and cocoa butter (I smell like an almond joy bar!!!! – and yes, I licked my arm to see if I tasted like one too), and have been keeping them in a ziplock bag in the bathroom. I wanted to give some as gifts for Christmas, and am pretty sure the ziplock bag isn’t quite fancy enough 🙂
Brittney Wood
I am so excited about making this! I never would have thought to infuse the oils with coffee, you are a crunchy genius!!!
Rachel
Can’t wait to try it! Quick queation: can you use EVOO in place of the tamanu oil?
5x5 Photography
I don’t know tamanu oil, so I don’t know why it’s there, but avocado oil or grapeseed oil are both better choices for your skin than EVOO.
DesignerGirl
Yay! I’m sooooo making these for Christmas gifts (because I can be honest with my mom that way and tell her they help with cellulite)! I’m glad you posted the recipe. Just based on what you’d said before, I had an idea of trying them with hazelnut oil and evening primrose oil, but I totally wouldn’t have thought to infuse with coffee OR the rose geranium eo. 🙂 And lucky for me, I just ordered some rose geranium yesterday! Woohoo!
Molly
I never thought about rubbing it on before the shower. That’s a good idea.
Dbloomingdale2000
I just found this site today and I have to say this is the most exciting forum I have come across in a long time. I just finished getting my coffee infusion going and am looking forward to using it in some lotion bars. I am thinking about buying some coffee butter just for an extra punch of caffine. In the past, I have made lotion bars in molds and then packaged them in tins. This year I made lotion bars as part of a b and b set I made for coworkers and packaged them in deodorant tubes. I have to say that I like it in the tubes a lot. But I did have to correct one of my recipients when she got excited that I made my own deodorant too!!!!
